Part 1. Name three techniques an author uses to create character and give an example from the story for each one.

An author creates character by what other characters say about the character, to the character, and when the author gives a physical description of the character. The author Myron Levoy uses those three techniques in Aaron's gift. An example of characters saying something about Aaron is, "He's a genius!" which is said by his dad. That quote helps us understand that Aaron is inteligent. An example of someone telling Aaron something is when his mother tells him to stay away from the gang, even after Aaron pleads with her. That tells us that Aaron really wanted to be in that gang because he did not have much friends. The author uses physial description when his dad also says, "Ten years old and it's better than Dr. Bleasco could do." That quote tells us Aaron's age which is ten years old.
2. Use each of these vocabulary words in an original sentence that explains something about the story.
You may change the form of the words.

assassinate - Czar Alexander the Second was assassinated and was replaced by Alexander the Third who's soldiers killed the Jewish and killed Aaron's grandmother's goat.

stoop - Aaron's friend Noreen Callahan, played on the stoop in front of their apartment that led to three flights of stairs.

frenzy - When Aaron first saw the pigeon with the broken wing, it was trying to fly away, but it's wing made it look like it moving in a frenzied way.

mascot - The gang leader, Carl, told Aaron he could join their club if Pidge would be the mascot, but instead they tried burning their symbol.

thrash - Aaron gave Pidge some cookie crumbs so it would stop thrashing and would calm down.

3. Write a paragraph to answer this question. Be sure you relate your answer to the plot of the story.

Can a person "make up" for terrible things that have happened to someone else?

Yes, I think a person can "make up" for bad things that have happened to someone else. In Aaron's story, Aaron's grandmother's goat was killed by the cossacks in Ukraine. Aaron felt bad because her goat died and he wanted to make up for what she had lost. When he heard it was her birthday soon, Aaron planned to give his grandmother Pidge because it might make up for what happened to her goat. When Pidge got away, and Aaron ran home, his grandmother said thank you for the present. At first Aaron did not understand because the present got away, but then he realized that it was set free and his grandmother would have set it free after her birthday. Aaron's grandmother wanted her goat to be free of the cossacks so he wouldn't have been killed and Pidge was free so he would not be killed by the gang. Aaron found a way to make up for the sorrow of his grandmother.
